Participation Grades

This year I added an in-depth way to assess students for their participation in the classroom. I have encouraged them to be good stewards of time, their personal items, and the classroom so I have called the grade a stewardship grade. They are awarded 5 points a day if they bring their materials, show up to class on time, help with classroom chores, and are respectful to their peers and their teacher. I am wondering what you think about this?

I know that teachers often will add participatory grades for stewardship as a small percentage of their grade but I do not see how that is a true evaluation of the material covered. My personal opinion is that it should be a part of your positive incentive procedure.

Assessment techniques are a passion of mine and I am intrigued at what beomes a part of a student's grade. Assigning a grade for participating in behavioral activities is seemingly well and profitable, but I have often questioned whether it should be reflected as a part of a student's academic success. There are other means of communicating a student's stewardship like conduct grades and ability evaluations. Eventually, that student's responsibility issues will affect his grade. Just a thought. I am interested to read more on this topic.
I think it's an interesting idea. Under what subject will you post the grade? We did something very similar to this as part of our reading grade. Each child received 25 points at the beginning of each quarter. Points could be lost for the same type reasons you listed above. At the end of the quarter, those points were put into our gradebooks out of 25. The score entered counted 10% of the reading grade. I think it helped with managing the reading groups. It was helpful for keeping students participating and on task.
